Products had evolved independently over many years, resulting in duplicated UI patterns, fragmented documentation and inconsistent accessibility across customer journeys.

Over the next seven years I helped establish and evolve the enterprise design system that became the foundation for Three's web and mobile products.

My work went far beyond designing components. I helped build the reusable framework that designers, engineers and content teams relied on every day — improving consistency, accelerating delivery and changing how digital products were designed across the organisation.

My responsibilities ranged from component design and accessibility through to implementation support, documentation, design operations, design system governance and ultimately the migration from Sketch to Figma.

My role
Senior UI Designer (Design Systems)

Working within a multidisciplinary team of designers, product managers and engineers, I was responsible for:

Designing reusable UI components and interaction patternsBuilding and evolving scalable component librariesRationalising duplicated UI patterns into reusable systemsDefining accessibility standards (WCAG AA)Creating and maintaining design system documentationSupporting engineering teams throughout implementationDriving adoption of the design system across multiple product teamsMentoring designers and promoting component-first workflowsSupporting the evolution of the system through Three's digital rebrand

The challengeThree's digital products had grown organically over many years.

Different teams had solved similar problems in different ways, creating duplicated components, inconsistent customer experiences and fragmented implementation across products.

The challenge wasn't simply to build a component library.

It was to establish a shared design language that designers and engineers could both trust, improving quality, accessibility and delivery while reducing duplication across the organisation.

Creating a scalable component system
Working initially in Sketch, I helped build a comprehensive component library organised around Atomic Design principles.

Every component was designed to:
communicate hierarchy clearlymeet WCAG AA accessibility standardsscale responsively across breakpointsbehave consistently across productssupport efficient implementation by engineering teams
Rather than designing individual pages, we focused on creating robust building blocks that could be reused throughout the organisation.

As the system matured, we continually identified duplicated patterns across products, consolidating them into reusable components so teams solved problems once instead of repeatedly solving them independently.

That shift towards component-first thinking fundamentally changed how digital products were designed at Three.

Documentation that became part of the workflow
A design system only succeeds if people understand how to use it.

We initially documented the system within InVision before rebuilding and expanding everything into Zeroheight to form a living knowledge base.

Every component included guidance covering:
usagebehaviouraccessibilityresponsive behaviourmotionimplementation guidanceengineering code references
Rather than repeatedly answering the same questions across different teams, documentation became the shared source of truth for designers, developers and content teams, making consistent implementation much easier across the organisation.

Supporting implementation

My involvement didn't end once components had been designed.

I worked closely with engineers throughout implementation to ensure components behaved as intended and maintained the quality established during design.

We regularly discussed accessibility, interaction behaviour, responsive edge cases and implementation constraints, helping reduce the gap between design intent and the final product.

During Three's migration from Fatwire to Adobe Experience Manager, the design system became instrumental in translating reusable components into the new CMS, enabling content teams to publish updates in hours rather than days.

Migrating the design system to FigmaIn 2023 I helped lead the migration from Sketch to Figma.

Rather than simply moving files between tools, we used the migration as an opportunity to modernise the design system.

Using Variables, Design Tokens and advanced component architecture, I rebuilt libraries that:
automatically adapted across layoutsresponded intelligently to light and dark surfacessupported desktop and touch interactionsincluded interactive behaviours for rapid prototypingwere easier to maintain and scale as the system evolved
Alongside the technical migration, I mentored designers, product owners and content teams as they adopted new component-based workflows within Figma.

Outcomes
The design system became the foundation of Three's digital ecosystem.

Key outcomes included:
Accessibility scores improving from the high 70s into the low 90s using Google Lighthouse
Publishing times reduced from days to hours
Successful delivery of a major digital rebrand with significantly faster rollout
Consistent UI patterns across web and mobile products
Greater collaboration between design, engineering and content teams
Organisation-wide adoption of component-first design practices
Reduced duplication through reusable components and shared patterns
A trusted design system used daily across multiple product teams

Perhaps the biggest achievement wasn't the component library itself, but helping change how the organisation thought about designing digital products.

Over time, the focus shifted from creating individual pages to building reusable systems that improved consistency, quality and delivery across the business.

Looking aheadA well-structured design system should do more than support today's design process—it should be ready for the next generation of digital product creation.

By the time I left Three, the design system had evolved into a mature collection of reusable components, design tokens, behavioural guidance and documentation that provided a strong foundation for AI-assisted design workflows.

During 2025–26 we began exploring how AI agents could use the design system to generate page layouts from natural language prompts. Because components were consistently defined, documented and governed, the system was already structured in a way that supported this emerging approach.

Those experiments reinforced an important principle: investing in a well-governed design system doesn't just improve consistency today—it creates the structured foundation that future AI-powered design tools will increasingly depend upon.

Working alongside UX designers, product managers and engineers, I translated the new visual language into a cohesive mobile experience that aligned with our evolving design system while making everyday customer journeys faster, clearer and easier to use.

My roleSenior UI Designer

My responsibilities included:

Designing interfaces for key customer journeys
Extending the design system for native mobile
Creating reusable components
Defining interaction and motion behaviour
Collaborating closely with UX designers and engineers
Supporting implementation through documentation
Maintaining visual consistency across the product

The challenge
The previous app had become technology-led rather than user-led.

Navigation was inconsistent, key tasks were difficult to find and the experience no longer reflected Three's evolving digital brand.

Our goal was to create an app that felt intuitive from first use while bringing the visual language of the wider design system into a native mobile experience.

	&#60;img width="1932" height="1214" width_o="1932" height_o="1214" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/fafb16f6c1aa58cbd4b0fc3b970c393e26f8db7487bff23ef2651197b0608960/previous.gif" data-mid="246378350" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/fafb16f6c1aa58cbd4b0fc3b970c393e26f8db7487bff23ef2651197b0608960/previous.gif" /&#62;

Designing for clarity
Working closely with the UX team, we established a clear information hierarchy throughout the application.

Each screen was structured around:

primary tasks
supporting actions
secondary content

This allowed customers to complete common journeys quickly while still making additional features easy to discover.

By extending the existing design system into mobile, we were able to maintain consistency between web and app while creating components appropriate for native interactions.

Building reusable foundations
As new patterns emerged during the project, I documented them within the design system so they could be reused across future releases.

Documentation covered:

component usage
motion behaviour
interaction patterns
native iOS and Android considerations

This ensured the app remained consistent as it continued to evolve.

Collaboration
Throughout the project I worked closely with:

UX designers to refine customer journeys
Product Managers to prioritise features
Engineers to ensure high-quality implementation
Design system colleagues to maintain consistency across platforms

This close collaboration allowed design decisions to move efficiently from concept through to production.

OutcomesUser testing demonstrated that the redesigned app was substantially easier to use than its predecessor.

During testing, participants were able to:

complete key journeys without instruction
recover independently from errors
locate features confidently
understand billing and account management more easily

Following launch, the app also delivered measurable commercial improvements, including:

+21% Android app rating
+38% iOS app rating
+20% contract handset growth during Black Friday 2025
+25% SIM-only growth during the same period
+£100k generated from data packs during the first month
+65% increase in add-on sales

The project demonstrated how a robust design system, combined with close collaboration between design, product and engineering, could deliver a significantly improved customer experience alongside measurable business results.Continuous optimisation

Rather than treating the design as complete after launch, we continually refined key journeys based on customer feedback, analytics and evolving business priorities. This iterative approach reduced friction, improved usability and ensured the app continued to meet both customer and commercial goals.

RoleLead UI designer
	Duration2015-2016
	TeamCross-functional product team
ImpactCreated reusable UI patterns and guidelines that established consistency across a large-scale enterprise platform

&#60;img width="2720" height="2720" width_o="2720" height_o="2720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c03a7f3bc34eceb3926897d3b733d5435ed428989aa757fff6541dac2c7c7a6f/oldmutual_1.jpg" data-mid="2959938" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c03a7f3bc34eceb3926897d3b733d5435ed428989aa757fff6541dac2c7c7a6f/oldmutual_1.jpg" /&#62;

Before component libraries, design tokens and collaborative tools like Figma became the norm, many large digital products still needed the same things they need today: consistency, reusable patterns and clear documentation.

As Lead UI Designer on Old Mutual Wealth's new pensions and investments platform, I worked alongside UX designers, product owners and engineers to create a consistent interface across a large and highly complex enterprise product.

Although the tools were very different to those available today, many of the design principles I applied during this project continue to shape how I approach product design and design systems today.

&#60;img width="1260" height="2000" width_o="1260" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9f3c0dfc04fffea3e4387778e9869d6a192bbbe0c1434ee00efc7ca20504515a/SKA0002_A0_wealth_client_view_accounts_v0.4.jpg" data-mid="2959994" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9f3c0dfc04fffea3e4387778e9869d6a192bbbe0c1434ee00efc7ca20504515a/SKA0002_A0_wealth_client_view_accounts_v0.4.jpg" /&#62;

My role

I led the UI design across a programme of work spanning more than a year, collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team responsible for redesigning Old Mutual Wealth's adviser platform.

My responsibilities included:

Leading the visual design across multiple workstreams
Collaborating closely with UX designers as journeys evolved
Defining reusable interface patterns
Designing responsive layouts for desktop and tablet
Producing comprehensive UI guidelines for development teams
Maintaining consistency across the growing platform
The challenge

This wasn't a marketing website or a simple customer journey.

The platform supported financial advisers carrying out complex day-to-day tasks, including:

portfolio creation
investment research
financial reporting
user administration
managing multiple client accounts
batch processing

Each workstream introduced new interface challenges, while still needing to feel like part of a single coherent product.

	Designing for complex workflows

One of the biggest challenges was making complicated financial processes feel understandable.

Working closely with the UX team, I translated wireframes into detailed interface designs, refining layouts and interactions as new usability challenges emerged.

This wasn't a linear hand-off from UX to UI. It was a collaborative process where visual design often highlighted opportunities to simplify interactions, clarify hierarchy and improve user understanding before development began.

That continuous dialogue between UX and UI became one of the strengths of the project.Creating reusable patterns

Although the term design system wasn't widely used at the time, we recognised the importance of consistency across such a large product.

I created reusable interface patterns covering common interactions including:

progress indicators
validation and error messaging
tables and data presentation
navigation
forms
process journeys
signposting

These patterns reduced duplication and helped ensure users encountered familiar behaviours throughout the platform.

&#60;img width="1260" height="1000" width_o="1260" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f207c676493e99b9f9dcf5c8665d613eb6c92f507cb812597e4f0cab9f236ab6/SKA0002_A17_risk_confirmation_v0.2.jpg" data-mid="2960421" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f207c676493e99b9f9dcf5c8665d613eb6c92f507cb812597e4f0cab9f236ab6/SKA0002_A17_risk_confirmation_v0.2.jpg" /&#62;

	Responsive before responsive was easy

The platform needed to support both desktop and tablet users.

Rather than simply scaling layouts, we carefully reviewed interactions to determine whether they should adapt for keyboard and mouse input or touch devices.

Some interactions required complete redesigns for touch, while others simply needed adjustments to sizing and spacing.

This ensured the platform remained intuitive regardless of device.

Building the design guidelines

As the project expanded across multiple workstreams, maintaining consistency became increasingly important.

Alongside the UI design work, I authored a comprehensive design guidelines document that eventually exceeded ninety pages.

The documentation covered:

visual language
interaction behaviour
validation
tables
process flows
navigation
asset selection
interface standards

It became the primary reference for both developers implementing the platform and future design teams extending it.

In hindsight, this was effectively an early design system—created before today's dedicated tooling existed.

&#60;img width="2000" height="1333" width_o="2000" height_o="1333" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6d88ac8b8f89226cc72466ef76f8d948f3ef86287495fdb14c2c1fd781de8f3d/oldmutual_2.jpg" data-mid="2959942" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6d88ac8b8f89226cc72466ef76f8d948f3ef86287495fdb14c2c1fd781de8f3d/oldmutual_2.jpg" /&#62;Looking back

This project was completed several years before tools such as Sketch libraries, Figma components, variables and design tokens transformed how design systems are built.

Components were created using Photoshop Smart Objects, and the guidelines were produced in Adobe InDesign as a structured PDF.

The technology has evolved considerably since then, but the underlying principles have remained the same: designing reusable patterns, documenting behaviour, collaborating closely with engineering and creating consistent user experiences at scale.

Looking back, this project marked an important step in my own journey towards specialising in design systems—a direction that would later define much of my work at Three UK.

CAPITA SYNAPTIC – PENSION PLANNING PLATFORMCreating a scalable UI framework for complex financial products
RoleLead UI designer
	Duration1 year
	TeamUI/UX
	ImpactClarity, consistency &#38;amp; usability

Capita Synaptic engaged us to create a unified UI framework for a suite of pension planning tools used by financial advisers. Working as Creative Lead alongside the UX team, I translated wireframes into a consistent visual language that could scale across multiple products while making complex financial information easier to understand and navigate.

The challenge was to create a responsive interface capable of supporting everything from standard laptops to large HD displays, where advisers often work with extensive data tables, charts and detailed pension information. At the same time, the interface needed to remain approachable, accessible and visually consistent across a growing portfolio of products.

A carefully structured colour system communicated hierarchy, status and validation throughout the applications. Information architecture, typography and spacing were designed to improve readability when presenting large volumes of financial data, while interaction patterns remained consistent regardless of the product being used.

The responsive framework also introduced layouts optimised for wider desktop displays, giving advisers more space to compare data, review pension performance and complete complex tasks efficiently.

OutcomeThe result was a cohesive design system that brought consistency across Capita Synaptic's pension planning products, improving usability for advisers while giving development teams a reusable set of interface patterns that could be applied across future products.

The project also reinforced many of the principles that continue to underpin my work today: scalable design systems, interaction design, accessibility, collaboration with UX and engineering, and creating interfaces that simplify complex information without sacrificing functionality.

As Creative Lead for the UI phase of the UCAS website redesign, I transformed UX wireframes into a responsive interface that balanced a bold new visual identity with the needs of students navigating one of the most important decisions of their education.

Working alongside UX designers, I developed the interface across a wide range of page templates using a mobile-first approach, ensuring the experience remained intuitive and consistent across phones, tablets and desktop devices.

&#60;img width="942" height="908" width_o="942" height_o="908" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6f9c5240458abee38a464d41e37129b8c9b022b8f1f378c0d5bbb900a7b42ce2/ucas_d1_o.jpg" data-mid="2778670" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/942/i/6f9c5240458abee38a464d41e37129b8c9b022b8f1f378c0d5bbb900a7b42ce2/ucas_d1_o.jpg" /&#62;My role
Led the visual and interaction design from wireframes through to final UI.Worked closely with UX designers to refine user journeys and interface behaviour.Created responsive page templates within a Drupal-based design framework.Established a consistent visual language across a flexible component hierarchy.Collaborated with stakeholders to align branding, usability and technical requirements.
&#60;img width="942" height="1000" width_o="942" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eadf693192012fb9d73bbee9cdc2ccf94ec5af28fe219eace13b9a7f6eddbb9d/ucas_d2_o.jpg" data-mid="2778671" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/942/i/eadf693192012fb9d73bbee9cdc2ccf94ec5af28fe219eace13b9a7f6eddbb9d/ucas_d2_o.jpg" /&#62;
Design challengeThe project sat at the intersection of several competing demands. UCAS's branding agency was simultaneously evolving the organisation's offline identity, while the website needed to support complex information architecture, diverse content types and a predominantly student audience with very different devices and browsing habits.

The challenge was to create an interface that felt modern and engaging without sacrificing clarity or usability. Every design decision needed to reinforce consistency across hundreds of pages while giving content editors the flexibility to build a wide variety of layouts within Drupal.

&#60;img width="1439" height="1452" width_o="1439" height_o="1452" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b8e0fa724fc072135fb15853e3ee686630b7db9f56ae6cb314a6b4212b3aab1b/ucas_responsive_o.jpg" data-mid="2778672" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b8e0fa724fc072135fb15853e3ee686630b7db9f56ae6cb314a6b4212b3aab1b/ucas_responsive_o.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="942" height="679" width_o="942" height_o="679" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/dcae835aa05630b8022bda2cc096a2b7ce5aa1950c9d65ee34f4aac9e45f0ec4/ucas_m1_o.jpg" data-mid="2778673" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/942/i/dcae835aa05630b8022bda2cc096a2b7ce5aa1950c9d65ee34f4aac9e45f0ec4/ucas_m1_o.jpg" /&#62;
OutcomeThe result was a responsive design framework that successfully combined a new visual identity with clear, user-focused interaction design. By creating reusable templates and a consistent visual language, the project delivered a cohesive experience that supported complex content while remaining approachable for students across multiple devices.

The project strengthened my experience designing large-scale public-facing digital services, translating UX into polished interfaces and creating scalable design foundations that balanced user needs, business objectives and technical constraints.

The brief was to create, using established branding, a new website that would integrate a large archive database system containing information on books, authors and prize winners.

I worked as the creative lead on this new business project, closely with the account director and development team.

We were asked to consider ‘responsive design’ in our creative, so I worked the designs into three sizes: a standard 960px grid for desktop screens, as well as a tablet and smartphone format, where the site will detect screen size and reformat the grid to suit the device.

These concepts took 10 days and the pitch was a success. I then subsequently created the new website UI and UX which went live in 2012.

SAINT-GOBAIN
Our brief was to create an iPad app that would be used by visitors to the client's Innovation Centre in London – a showroom for the latest in building technology solutions.

Each visitor would be given an iPad on arrival: to be able to check-in and then explore the products on display. We built two routes – one via a map interface with the objects indicated in a 2D space – and the second via the iPad camera, using augmented reality floating captions, triggered by AR codes displayed near the objects in the centre.

The user was able to indicate which products they were interested in, which on check-out enabled the client to build a database of contacts, who they could then send further information to. Each different 'chapter' to the user journey, from check-in, to exploring, to 'check-out' was designed with colour coding in the UI, so it appeared very clear as to where the user is at any time.

I was the creative lead on this project with the UI design, and also involved heavily in the UX user journey thinking and wire framing. The app was launched on iPad minis in the centre in early 2014.

		<description>Product redesign for Espresso

DISCOVERY EDUCATION

&#60;img width="2000" height="1195" width_o="2000" height_o="1195" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c0ebe25b5961ab32394811f60f6a216f160d3672633543765ac3c4df538d3b5e/espresso_2.jpg" data-mid="2953077" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c0ebe25b5961ab32394811f60f6a216f160d3672633543765ac3c4df538d3b5e/espresso_2.jpg" /&#62;
Discovery Education hired me through the summer/autumn of 2016 to join the Sprint team on a complete overhaul of the UX/UI of their primary schools education product, Espresso. As the lead creative, I was working closely with the lead UX designer, UX researcher, and the head of the development team as we progressed UX into UI, and eventually into development. As a joint UI/UX team, we had to come up with component-based solutions, test UX and UI variations, and get them approved from several different in-house stakeholder teams, before we could brief them into the developers.

Responsive and versatile

The Espresso site needed to be very versatile: the landing pages at each stage required several template varations for teaser content. So we came up with a modular card-based system that would work seamlessly from mobile to tablet, desktop, and HD size (to accommodate classroom whiteboard projection).Cards would be scheduled through the CMS to serve up specific content from the teaching curriculum, or event-style content for a certain time period.Different card layouts were available to the site editors, and the ability to use a scene-setting background image/video. This was all in line with Discovery Education’s marketing: ‘Make Your World Bigger’.

The UI was constantly tested to check clarity and legibility in the classroom setting using whiteboard projection. Helped by our user research, we came up with an innovative set of coloured shapes within a mega-menu dropdown, to help young children navigate the site while they’re still learning to read.

Presenting video contentA large part of the new Espresso site was a channel full of bite-size educational video content, straight from the Discovery Education stable. We were tasked with creating a full video channel experience, using our card-based UI to interlink content by curated selection or by content theme. Videos would also appear within educational modules outside this area of the site, so the visual language of the UI cards, and how they interlink, was crucial to making this a seamless experience for the user.

Reporting the weekly newsAnother important section of the site was the weekly news, which was curated to different age groups. Our UI card system was versatile enough that we could use scene-setting background imagery, and tease up landing page content in an appealing way.All images © Discovery Education Europe Ltd

2011 CENSUS
The project ran for 18 months, starting with wireframing and continuing through to user interface creative and briefing that into the developers.

I worked as the creative lead on this project, closely with the account director, development team and externally with the client at the Office of National Statistics.

During the project many pages and new website areas were created, culminating in call-to-action work to steer the user towards online census completion.

I also art directed an animation on the history of the Census and worked closely with the animation designer.

Throughout the project I was also involved in transferring the brand across other online areas including an extranet, a twitter feed and a youtube channel.
